Tulips On A Table Brighten A Disappointing Day

Tulips on a table brighten the day

We had an exciting moment the other evening. The forecast was for snow....It was going  to start snowing at midnight and snow all morning!  This was going to be the  snow of the season...and then we could get on with spring!

I already had my snowshoes out, ready to go...I had big hopes!  Mr I Don't Garden went to bed with plans to sleep in and  stay home.   We were going to play all day! (all photos enlarge)

He was so disappointed to wake up to this~~~~

and not this
Winter 2008

I was disappointed, too.  Even though the  Garden of Benign Neglect looked

lovely with a dusting of white~~

The snow outlined the garden and  the browns disappeared.

Just a little snow makes  everything look brighter, fresher, cleaner. Rocks, plants and  the fish  seemed more vibrant to me.

One of the  Gold Flare azaleas looks snug  in its new home by the dry creek.  I love the twisted brown stems and the buds against the snow.  It's ready to bloom this spring!  (and did you notice she's still wearing her tags~~ like Minnie Pearl's hat at the Grand Ole Opry.)

It all melted rather quickly.

Mr I Don't Garden headed to work and the snowshoes went back into storage.

But wait, I just heard that there is  a 60% chance of snow on Monday!  Those  snow shoes still have a chance to get a  workout this winter!

My dear friends, I hope the weekend brings you perfect weather!

Gail

The trouble with weather forecasting is that it's right too often for us to ignore it and wrong too often for us to rely on it. ~Patrick Young

  1. Gail,

Maybe you'll have your pretty snow soon! I can't wait to see photos of your azalea in bloom by your dry stream.

H-O-W-D-Y! Love the Minnie Pearl comparison! LOL

  2. Hi Gail, it is pretty when the garden is white, just an inch or two as long it covers the ugly and dull parts.
Did you know and this is a fact that it is always a 50% chance that the weather tomorrow will be as today! It's true.

Have a great weekend Gail and Mr I don't Garden.

  3. Cameron,

Do you think we have to be from around here to get that one! How are our foes/friends the deer? You have me thinking I need to plant flowers and shrubs that are not palatable to our dear deer!

    Have a good weekend.

  4. Tyra,

Good afternoon to you! The weather is too unpredictable here (as it is elsewhere I am sure)! Weather forecasters actually use our big interstate as a dividing line for all manner of weather fronts! I may have to pack up my snow shoes and head north! Have a great weekend.

  5. Gail, that is just enough snow for me! I am hoping for a dusting this weekend but only a dusting please.

    Best wishes Sylvia (England)

  6. Sylvia,

Good afternoon! I know what you mean...I actually prefer a dusting, but when I heard snow was forecast, the little kid in me wanted to run and shout and play in it...another time!

Take care and I am so glad you stopped by!

  7. Good morning Gail, oh your azalea looks lovely, it is a nice size too! I had forgotten about your deer problem, azalea flowers and buds are their most favorite foods! Oh no! We did not get any snow from that last go around, but they are promising some for Monday night into Tues. and Wed., even for us southern TN folk. And Cameron beat me to the Hoooowdy! Ah'm jus' so glad to be here!

  8. A dusting of snow is like fairy dust and makes everything look new and fresh doesn't it? I hope you do get snow on Monday but keep it down there!

  9. Well,
I'm still jealous we haven't even gotten a flurry! We are way overdue for a good snow.--Randy

  10. Frances,

I was pleased that the azaleas look so good by the dry creek...They really have added a bit of structure to the flat area! I can keep momma deer and her baby away if I remember to keep the gates closed! There are three of them...One evening I chased them out and they ran around to the back gate which I hadn't noticed was open! They seem to be gone now!

The snow would have insulated the plants a bit more from this freaky cold weather! I can whine and complain...but it is what it is!

  11. Layanee,

I will have a stern talk with Mother Nature and plead your case and mine. Please MN...snow here, not there!

I hope you have a delicious weekend without snow!

  12. Darn the luck Gail. I hope you get a snow day before winter is over. It would be a shame to not put those snowboots to work at least once per season.

Ahhhh those tulips look wonderful. Maybe I will have to treat myself to some of that tulip sunshine today.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Ah it was disappointing! Although the school kids weren't they still got out. Monday to Tuesday looks promising though. After one more snow I'm ready to close up and call it a winter. Time for Spring! And more importantly warmer weather!

  14. Randy,

Hi...while I am chatting with Mother Nature about snow here...I'll ask her to send it your way, too! It really does pretty up the garden. Makes f.or some sweet photos! Have a good weekend!

  15. Dave,

Me, too. My garden buddy the garden coach says we are lucky that it is staying chilly. She believes the spring bloom will be better and not likely to get frozen like other years. Now that is a good trade off! I hope you all have a great weekend.

I found seeds from the Salvia azurea...want a few!

Hi! Do treat yourself to tulips...Really bright ones that command attention. I usually get pink, but these are gorgeous!

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  19. Frances,

Exactly so! One day, a very long time ago, I was getting my hair cut...when I noticed a woman sitting next to me who extremely tan with a weathered face all lit up with smiles. She was dressed in her white tennis outfit! Looking closely I realized it was Sarah Cannon, aka Minnie Pearl! I love the 'celebrity' encounters we have here!

Thanks for clarifying her famous call!

  21. Gail, your garden is lovey with just the dusting of snow.I know you were disappointed not to get more, hopefully soon.

The tulips on your table are so pretty! I can't wait to see mine pop up this spring.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well, I'm sure we could lend you some of our snow if you are that desperate for some. Mr. I-Don't-Garden would quickly become I-Have-to-Shovel though--we have heaps of it, as you've seen from my recent photos.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Delighted to hear I'm not the only one who enjoys winter fun in the snow. Gail, grab your snowshoes and Mr.I-Don't-Garden and head north ~ we have PLENTY to play in. You too Tyra ... perhaps fondue by the fire after!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Gail, the big talk here is that we are getting snow on Monday. Of course I won't believe it until I see it! I always say if the weather forecasters are predicting it, it won't happen. It's when they don't expect it, we get it!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Keep those snowshoes ready Gail. They may yet get that work out. We still have a dusting here but it should go fast today, the sun is finally out! The azaleas sure looks good.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Jodi,

I would love just a tiny bit of your snow, please! Just a little...don't even think about sending us the kind of wind and weather you all have;-) We aren't made of hardy stock! The whining would not be pretty! it is so easy for we southern dwellers to romanticize a snowfall!

I am pretty sure Mr I Don't Garden would morph into Mr I Don't Like This Snow rather quickly and we would be searching for someone to clean off the very long driveway!

  27. Hi Gail - just hopping over with a quick answer for you from over at my place about verges...

A verge is the wasteland at the side of most of our roads which I think you might call the kerb, though kerb has a more specific meaning over here as it is the edge between the pavement (sidewalk) and the road. You're right a YAWA is needed (with photos) and a vote on whether verges are out or in!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Joey,

I was thinking the same thing...a trip north to play in the snow and then a delicious fireside dinner. I wonder if I can talk the Mrr into a fun long weekend some hwere!

    Have a wonderful weekend!

  29. Phillip,

That is so true! I don't know why i got my hopes up...except the little kid in me wanted so badly to put those snowshoes on and tramp around the neighborhood! Aren't we too silly! I hope you have a Wonderful weekend...

    gail

    ReplyDelete
  30. VP,

Thank you for such a quick answer! I think we call verges...shoulders. The curb is a concrete edge...specifically. Next to the curb is the Hell Strip...that no-man's land that technically belongs to the city and is very far away from the hose in case you want to pretty it up! In my neighborhood we don't have curbs or sidewalks.

  31. Tina,

I've put them away! I am going to wake up and be surprised on Monday or Tuesday to see snow and then rush to the TV to see if work is cancelled...really the telephone to see if clients have cancelled!

  33. Aw, so sorry about your disappointing snowfall Gail! If it was possible I'd be more than happy to box up some of ours and send it to you! I'm glad you have those beautiful tulips to brighten the day.

With the frigid weather we've been having, I'm grateful for the snow cover, hoping it's providing some protection from the bitter wind chill readings.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Linda,

That snow cover must be a blessing for you folks gardening zones 5 and colder! Is it my imagination or is it colder this year? I do remember thinking that you guys had a long wet winter in 2008. But I don't remember the frigid tmps went with it. Researchers say our memories aren't as accurate as we think they are!~~ I hope you have a good weekend.

  35. Sorry you didn't get to give your snowshoes a work out. There is still hope. My husband constantly complains about the weather forecasters, he says the more technology they get the more they are wrong. What happened to watching nature to predict the incoming weather?

  46. Hi Gail.....The garden did look pretty though.....and did you really want lots of the white stuff??

We are expecting snow on Sunday....I do not want it to arrive but I have a feeling it is going to....I will keep you posted......

    ReplyDelete
  47. I haven't been able to tell Nancy that we got our first snow yet. You can't count something that falls to the ground and disappears on contact. That is all that has happened here. No snow! I would like at least one good snow. Maybe on Mondy...oh, I hope, i hope!

    ReplyDelete
  48. I'll mail you my new snowpants if you get the dump you're expecting. We got more today, more scheduled tomorrow and again for Sunday....I'm not leaving the house until I can see the pavement.

    ReplyDelete
  49. LOL, I love that last quote!

I would gladly ship some of our snow down to you:) Your garden does look lovely with its light covering of white. Although I don't have any azaleas, I do have several plants still sporting their tags as well; I'm hoping they last until spring, so I can file them safely away.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Your garden looks lovely with the dusting of snow on it Gail! We were suppose to get a few inches a couple of weeks ago and didn't even a flake. Actually I'm not terribly disappointed because it's only pretty until you have start shoveling it or driving in it. Us Virginians don't do snow well. lol (this area at least)

    ReplyDelete
  51. So let me see if I understand. If you got this snow, they your winter penance wousd be paid and spring would be right around the corner. With a puny showing, the big one is yet to come and as such, you can look head until it does. Is that how it is?

I'm that way with January...perhaps I would with a snow if it were at all reliable here. January is very reliable; after 31 days from the first of the year, I see hope! I don't care what the weather does, I have more light to see.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I think there are lots of people who would gladly give you some of their snow, if only it worked that way Gail!! Include me in that list! I hope you get your snowshoe workout soon. Meanwhile, the tulips brightened my day too. A red cheery tulip is great for that! Have a wonderful weekend.

  53. Hi Gail,
I had to laugh at this post with its wistful wishes for snow... oh if I could only send you the piles of it we still have here, I'd be glad to. I'm excited that we'll reach the low 40's on Saturday with sun, so hoping we can melt some off!! We're fed up with the snow and ice this year, and besides, it's been too deep for poor little Hanna to get through with her short legs!

Just occurred to us the other night that this is the first winter she's experienced, so we don't blame her. (We estimated from her spotty records that she was born in April, 2008.)

May you get your snowy wishes, and please keep it away from us so you can enjoy it all by yourself! :-)
