It will turn into an unholy mess if untended, with the stem tips rooting and making new plants. I was quite happy when I had the chance to remove a hedge of forsythia along the east side of the house. I replaced them with a mix of red elderberry, summersweet, and witch hazel. On the other hand, in this dismal cold spring when nothing blooms but snowdrops, it is nice to cut some stems of forsythia and bring them in for forcing.Jasonhttp://gardeninacity.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3093185160483906357.post-53759233923753044822013-03-26T10:32:47.810-05:002013-03-26T10:32:47.810-05:00the blues against the hedge is classic complimenta...the blues against the hedge is classic complimentary!!..it is indeed a stunner!sharonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02529895941009940357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3093185160483906357.post-56073383829453665002013-03-26T07:57:50.789-05:002013-03-26T07:57:50.789-05:00When we lived in town, we had a large bush and it ...When we lived in town, we had a large bush and it seemed it was only good for 2 things.....a beautiful spring display (which caused everyone to smile and be glad it was spring once again and rejoice in all that warm color) and for the House Sparrows to roost in during the winter, obnoxious foreign birds. Unpruned old wood in forsythia keeps it from blooming or lessens the blooms. I found that out when my single bush ceased to bloom altogether.
