Red Sky In Morning

Sailors take warning.

Gardeners take shelter the rains on the way!

With gratitude in her heart,  for the 3 inches of rain that fell on our gardens! (added 10/8)
Gail

“Like a red morn that ever yet betokened, Wreck to the seaman, tempest to the field, Sorrow to the shepherds, woe unto the birds, Gusts and foul flaws to herdmen and to herds.”
from Venus and Adonis (Shakespeare)

  1. Good morning Gail, that radar map is promising. We have had some precip, but await the red sky of morning, or the gray sky of morning with steady soaking rain would be even better.

  3. Oh - I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Maybe it will be a good chance to get some inside work done. My garden takes so much time when the weather is good that I hate being inside!

  4. It all looks promising Gail. I know you want more than promises. I hope you get plenty of rain. We have had a little rain from this system. My little garden is thrilled.

  5. Frances,

It rained and it is raining now...I hope it makes it over the mountain for your beautiful garden and the new plants you've added. I heard a meteorologist say that November and December will be better for TN. Let's hope so.

  6. Darla,

It isn't quite as red as the red skies in morning but it gave me some hope! Here's hoping you get rain, too.
Thank you...I shot it from the patio.

  7. Diana,

Yes inside work...I can dust, there is so much dust in the fall especially a dry fall. My family was always lucky if there was food on the table during good gardening weather. It was a big joke in the family. How is the rain situation for you?

  9. Oh yes, blessed rain has been falling in our area. Everything in the garden will look a little better and maybe our leaves will turn beautiful colors instead of drying up and looking like they are dead. Love the photo.

  13. Ernestine,

Isn't the rain a relief? The plants are so happy and this gardener is, too. This winter when we are tired of our wet weather we can remember this day and smile.

  14. shady,

Not yet, but I will today and I have to lie down and take a photo! It is also a chilly rainy day! It would be fun if some of my garden blogging buddies were nearby for coffee on the porch. Today would be a good day for a few visitors!

  16. Joy,

I will head up to visit you in a few minutes! This morning when Coal decided it was time to get up he sauntered from the foot of the bed, around the pillows and touched my eyelid with a gentle little pat! Wake up! If that doesn't work, I get the swishing tail in the face!

  18. susie,

I am sorry you didn't get rain! When you look at the drought photos of the US you can clearly see that many states are effected. I am so very glad we are catching a weather break, it was getting desperate here.....leaves were falling because they were dying.

  19. The rain is wonderful, isn't it? I was dancing around in it yesterday with my camera. Beautiful photos--we had gray skies, though, not red ones:)

We are enjoying some rain here too but we didn't need it as badly as you.

  21. I grew up on this poem. You did a lovely job showcasing it and bringing back memories. We got like 4 inches of rain. I'll be gardening a bit later today!

  22. Hope you get some rain! My dad was in the Navy so we always used that saying. Maybe you'll even get both in one day: red at night, sailor's delight.

  23. Marnie,

I love that one, too! The rain is welcome and now it does feel like autumn in Nashville! Btw...the miscanthus morning light can take the rain but the variegated one is getting laid low!

It is a nice little diddy...Did you ever read Red Sky In Morning? Also a sweet book I read as a young adult.

The rain is fantastic...I don't know how much we've gotten, I keep meaning to get a rain gauge! Enjoy it my friend and watch out for puddles!

  44. Hi Gail! Yes we have been very dry. The only rain of note we had had lately was when my garage roof was off. I'm glad your ground has been quenched.

  45. Cindy,

I am sorry I didn't remember, let's hope this front moves into your area and soon.

  46. Woo hoo!!! A break from the drought! So happy for you and your garden. Everything is sighing in relief (at least it feels that way when it happens here). Enjoy the moisture.

  47. Gail, I'm thrilled for you! Doesn't a good needed rain just make your day? It freshens the air and washes all that dust off the flowers. And no watering for a few days! :)

  48. Some of us are very happy with rain, others less so. It rained all day last Sunday which was quite a bore as we couldn't go outside. Fortunately after Sunday it stopped raining (well, just a light drizzle every once in a while) and we have had quite a bit of sunshine. So here it's the sunshine that makes people happy.

  49. The first one is an absolutely stunnning photograph.
The red look of the sky, just preeceding the rains is a delight to watch. Here, in my part of the world, rains outside the season are almost always accompanied by loud thunderstorms and strong winds; i find the whole atmosphere so created very heady.

  50. Beckie,

Yes to all you said! I would add that it helps me appreciate the simple things.

  52. green thumbs,

Hello and welcome to Tennessee! The thunderstorms you describe are wonderful...we used to have them, but not so much lately. There wasn't a bit of lighting, wind or rumble to this shower. It just rained. We are having a magnificent day today! A good one for planting and transplanting. I hope yours is perfect, too.

  53. Gail, crossing our fingers worked!
The rain gauge had 3 inches in it this morning! I am not joking, 3 inches on the mark! I am so excited...

  58. Hey Gail,
I saw the Nashville rain during the debate the other night (Chris Matthews called it a TN monsoon, lol), so I was really happy for you. Glad you got 3 inches... that should help make up the deficit for about hmmm, maybe a week or two? It has to help though, and your new Toad Lilies will be loving it for sure!

  59. Glory to the Rain Gail!!! Isn't it grand!! My garden has finally established itself. This was a horrible year to try and plant a new garden and forget my grass...no hope.
